Description

The Chitalpa Butterfly Garden palette is centered on the Pink Dawn chitalpa tree and Desert willow tree. Pink Dawn chitalpa is hybrid between Catalpa bignonioides, Common catalpa, and Chilopsis linearis, Desert willow. Both of these trees are well suited to residential scale gardens and are appreciated for their flower colors and summer shade. They also have value in attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden.

This garden palette is designed to offer a rich diversity of butterfly-attracting flowering plants for many sizes of residential spaces with many combinations of colors, textures and design uses. These plants can be combined with organic mulch, gravel or decomposed granite and help reduce the size of water needy lawns. This diversity helps achieve year around visual interest and habitat and food for birds and butterflies.

Horticultural Preferences

The Chitalpa Butterfly Garden includes plants that grow well with normal winter rains and low amounts of summer water. These are sun loving plants that prefer well drained soil conditions and inorganic mulch top dressings; wet organic mulch conditions during the summer months can lead to disease and stem rot.

Aesthetic Character

There are many colorful companion plants included in this palette that can help achieve abundant and diverse garden character. Plants such as Yellow bells, Lion's tail and Mexican bush sage provide deeply saturated flower colors; Blue oat grass and Powis Castle artemisia have pleasing gray-green foliage color and fine texture; Verbena and Yarrow add more garden color as well as attract butterflies. This palette has something to offer to everyone.

Moisture Needs

The chart shown below provides a baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed by plants in the Chitalpa Butterfly Garden throughout the average year. The high and low range of this irrigation schedule indicates these plants can grow with varying amounts of water depending upon exposure conditions and maturity of plants. Rains during the winter months noted by an asterisk (*) can provide sufficient moisture to eliminate the need for winter irrigation.
