Description

Kiwi aeonium brings a delightful spectrum of rose, yellow and green foliage color into containers, hanging baskets, banks and raised planters. Delightfully arranged rosettes of leaves create pleasing interest on this small mounding succulent. Over time, this cultivar mounds 2-3 ft. tall and as wide; light yellow flowers occur in summer.

Kiwi aeonium adds to the list of plants that provide rich year around color with its foliage. Most people think of flowers bringing color to the garden, however, succulents such as this remind us of the diversity of plants and the many ways they bring interest to a variety of situations. Kiwi aeonium is a good selection for hanging baskets, patio pots, spilling over walls, rock gardens and small spaces.

Water Needs

Kiwi aeonium is well adapted to all parts of the Inland Empire in sunny exposures with normal winter rains and low amounts of summer irrigation. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains often provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates Kiwi aeonium can grow with varying amounts of water; little supplemental water is needed during summer following the flowering cycle.

Maintenance

Aeoniums are generally low maintenance. Every few years, if plants become too tall and "leggy" looking for the space, stems can be cut about four inches below the leaves, left in the shade for a few days for the cut to "scab" and be re-rooted back in their desired location after the rest of old stems and roots have been cleared out. Aeoniums will send out new roots from the buried stems. Fall is the ideal time to take on this task because Aeoniums tend not to actively grow in the heat of summer (S).
