Description

Powis Castle artemisia is a low mounding shrub, herbaceous in character, that grows 2-3 ft. tall, 4-6 ft. across. Silvery gray-green foliage is finely divided and soft in appearance; flowers are inconspicuous.

Discovered in Powis Castle, Wales, Powis Castle artemisia has quickly become a popular garden plant in the Inland Empire due to its relatively small size, soft texture and silvery-gray color. It grows well in full sun to partial shade, on well-drained soils with moderate to low amounts of supplemental water. It is best to treat this selection like an herbaceous perennial; it is often short-lived to 3-5 years and looks best when trimmed each year to maintain a compact shape. It combines well in mixed border plantings, spilling over walls and on banks in both Mediterranean and cottage garden plantings.

Water Needs

The Powis Castle artemisia is well adapted to normal winter rains and periodic summer irrigation throughout the Inland Empire. Established plants grow well with periodic deep irrigation in the summer. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates it can grow with varying amounts of water; more supplemental water commonly results in a longer growing season and larger sizes.
