Description

Sunset rockrose is low spreading to mounding shrub, 18-24 in. tall and ranging 3-5 ft. across. Colorful flowers are deep rose-magenta with yellow centers cover the plant in spring. Foliage is comprised of pale green leaves that are covered with many small hairs and heavily textured.

This rockrose cultivar is a popular choice for use as a ground cover on banks and in mixed understory plantings within traditional Mediterranean and southwestern garden plantings. It can be planted as individual flowering accent shrubs as well for small group plantings. Seasonal pruning in the fall helps retain good form and foliage character for 4-6 years.

Water Needs

The sunset rockrose is highly adapted to warm and sunny climate conditions of the Inland Empire. Established plants grow well with periodic deep irrigation in the summer. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months marked by an asterisk (*) when winter rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates it can grow with varying amounts of water; more supplemental water commonly results in a longer flowering season and larger sizes.
