Violet trumpet vine

Clytostoma callistegioides

Description

Violet trumpet vine grows into a medium to large size evergreen vine with glossy green foliage and colorful lavender flowers. It is a fast growing vine with clinging tendrils, with stems capable of growing 15-25 ft. and longer. Leaves grow 2-3 in. long and produce deep shade when grown on a trellis or arbor. Heavy clusters of showy trumpet-shaped flowers grow 2-3 in. long and occur in spring.

This colorful vine comes from Argentina and southern portions of Brazil. It shows widespread adaptation to the Inland Empire, particularly when grown in rich soils and with regular water. It can tolerate cold temperatures to 20°F, and adapts to valley heat when planted in partial shade.

Violet trumpet vine has a combination of foliage and flowering characteristics that make it highly useful in both residential and commercial plantings, and in combination with the Crape Myrtle and Chitalpa plant palettes. It can be trained and pruned to fit smaller spaces or be left to cover larger overhead structures, fences and banks. It is a robust plant that adapts to many conditions and is widely valued for its generous flower display and rich foliage.
