Description

Baja spurge is a large shrub with many slender branches that weave into a intricate tangle of leafless stems 6-8 ft. tall and as wide. Large clusters of tiny pink and white flowers provide a colorful display in late spring.

This Baja California native is adapted to arid climate zones where it receives little annual rainfall. It is highly adapted to sun, heat, aridity and drought; a robust flowering cycle occurs after the winter rain season. It does show sensitivity to heavy frost and is recommended for use in southwestern garden plantings on slopes and in parts of the Inland Empire that experience litter winter frost.

Water Needs

Baja spurge is highly adapted to sunny garden locations on well drained soils and with low amounts of supplemental water during summer. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates it can grow with varying amounts of water; more water in the spring will result in a longer flowering season.
