Blanket flower

Gaillardia x grandiflora

Description

The Blanket flower is one of the toughest and easiest to grow flowering perennials for Inland Empire gardens. It loves sun, loam-type soils and regular moisture during the flowering season. By mid-summer, watering can be reduced. Many flowering variations can be found in local nurseries and garden centers during the spring.

This popular blanket flower is a hybrid derived from two North American natives, G. aristata and G. pulchella. It grows into a small neat mound 18-24 in. high and is well adapted to sunny locations with moderate amounts of supplemental water. It is very showy during late spring and is planted with other sun adapted perennials in borders, around boulders and in raised planters. Removing spent flower heads can extend flowering; some seeds can germinate and start new plants.
