Description

Germander sage is a low growing perennial to 2-3 ft. tall with a spreading root habit resulting in plants reaching 3-4 ft. wide and greater. Small gray leaves contrast nicely with colorful deep powder-blue flowers in late spring and fall, and intermittently during warm months.

This species is native to central Mexico's arid climate zones where it survives heat, cold and summer drought. It is well suited for planting along borders, on banks and slopes and in raised planters in Inland Empire gardens where its foliage and flowers provide showy character. It grows best in full sun, on well-drained soils and with reduced summer irrigation. Clipping in late fall can help maintain shape and stimulate more flowering in the spring.

Water Needs

Germander sage grows best in sunny locations on well drained soils and with low amounts of supplemental water during summer. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several winter months noted by an asterisk (*) when rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates it can grow with varying amounts of water.
