Description

The Jade plant and its several cultivars are winter flowering succulents with varying sizes, leaf shapes and flower colors. Jade plants are mostly popular as container plants for display in sunny to partial shade patio and courtyard spaces. They can grow well with periodic watering that is stored in their fleshy stems and leaves.

Some of the Jade plant cultivars that can be found in nurseries and garden centers including: C. ovata, a large shrub-like succulent that can reach 5-7 ft. tall. Its succulent foliage is comprised of elliptical and smooth emerald green leaves, 1-2 in. long, with red edges. Showy clusters of white to pink flowers can occur during winter. C. o. 'Gollum' has long tubular leaves with spoon-shaped ends; C. o. 'Hummel's Sunset' has distinctive orange leaf coloration during the winter; C. o. 'Pink Beauty' produces rosy-pink flowers on a small size plant.C. o. 'Crosby's Dwarf' has tiny leaves to 3/4 in. and grows 2-3 ft. tall.

C. o. 'Gollum'

C. o. 'Pink Beauty'

C. o. 'Tricolor' has mottled white, pink and green leaves.

Water Needs

Jade plant is well adapted to all parts of the Inland Empire in sunny and partial shade exposures with normal winter rains and low amounts of summer irrigation. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. It should be noted there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains often provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates Jade plant can grow with varying amounts of water; little supplemental water is needed during summer to maintain good character.
