Description

As the name implies, feathery cassia is a soft textured evergreen shrub growing 3-6 ft. tall and as wide. Foliage is comprised of finely divided gray-green leaves; intense yellow flowers cover the plant in mid winter to early spring for a striking floral display.

Native to Australia, feathery cassia is widely planted as a flowering accent shrub in drought tolerant and southwestern style gardens. It is adapted across the Inland Empire and grows best in sunny locations on well drained soils and with low amounts of summer water. It tolerates cold to 20°F and can be clipped to maintain smaller sizes in residential gardens.

Water Needs

Feathery cassia is well adapted to sunny locations on well drained soils and with low amounts of supplemental water during summer. The chart shown below provides a recommended baseline guide to the monthly irrigation schedule and volume of supplemental water needed to maintain healthy growth throughout the average year. As shown in the chart below, there are several months indicated by an asterisk (*) when winter rains can provide sufficient moisture and irrigation is not needed. The high and low range of moisture indicates it can grow with varying amounts of water. Once established, feathery cassia grows well on monthly deep water from July to October.

Maintenance

Very fast growing. Cut back as necessary to encourage more compact form (5). This can easily be accomplished by light pruning after winter and spring flowering (5). If flowers are left to develop seed pods, seeds may germinate and grow. Although it is not widely considered an invasive plant, because of this tendency, it is best not to plant this plant if your landscape is near a wild area (S).
